Covering Student Elections
Election season for the University of Glasgow is an exciting time on campus, with library hill buzzing with all four student bodies competing for your attention. While the University media usually stays well clear of the frantic campaigning and incessant leafleting, this year we decided to highlight the mania that is student politics.
This was Snapchat's time to shine. With over 5,000 followers, mostly consisting of students, Snapchat was the perfect platform to captivate the election hype sweeping campus. On top of that, Snapchat allowed candidates to send in their own their own 10-second videos, meaning that only a small amount of chasing up was needed. Plus, with candidates submitting their own content the election coverage could be as impartial as possible.
The GUU also had to be omitted last minute because a presidential candidate dropped out. Posting the Snap of the only remaining candidate would have been jumping the gun before anything was made official and posting only his Snap without one from his opponent would have brought into question our impartiality. So I just took out the GUU altogether, they hate democracy anyway.
To put these on Snapchat on the day, we loaded them up using an app called Mish Guru, one of our top trade secrets. There is currently no system for changing the order of scheduled posts, so I had to meticulously ensure that each snap was put in the perfect order, which each candidate's own Snap posted in alphabetical order. One mistake and every post after it has to be deleted.

Snapping is not an effective way of posting election results. Trying to grab the announcement of a result with only a 10-second window is an absolute nightmare. Start too soon and you've got a video saying "The winner is..." to cut off before the announcement, try to redo and no one knows what's going on. It's a fine art and I suck at it.
To get round my ineptitude, instead of my Snaps instantly being posted to the University Story, I waited until the results were finished, grabbed a few snaps of the guys who had won, and posted them to the story in the correct order. For the GUSA results, which went ridiculously fast, I got Cal to snap what she could, then whipped up a quick graphic with the names of the winners.

Mental few days, but absolutely worth it. Good luck to all those elected!
