With Snapchat fast becoming one of our major channels for student engagement we thought it would be the perfect platform to highlight the journey of an international student moving to Glasgow. Over the course of a couple of weeks new student Ruby documented her journey from California to Glasgow on UofG snapchat. Up to 2,000 people watched Ruby’s snaps, which showed her packing for Uni, saying goodbye to family and friends, travelling to Scotland and arriving in her new city.
There was a lot of work involved in supporting an international student takeover and promoting it on our other channels but it was worth it for the great content. The story gave prospective international student an honest insight into travel abroad for university. We also noticed an increase in our snapchat followers and views which is always nice!
Our steps to hosting an international takeover
1. Find the right student – Our international officers’ travel to recruitment events all over the world and meet lots of students. At an American event, one of the officers met Ruby and thought she would be perfect for the takeover and luckily, Ruby was keen to take part.
2. Chat with the student – We spoke to Ruby on Skype a few weeks before the takeover to cover all the logistics – from setting her up on our account to double checking her arrival dates and agreeing the exact times for her takeover (don’t forget time differences!)
3. Cross-promote – Ruby sent us a few photos and a video before her takeover started so we could promote it across all our channels in the run up. During her takeover, we posted a number of her snaps on facebook and twitter to encourage people to follow.
4. Welcome the student – We met Ruby and her mum at the airport to finish off the takeover. This part probably isn’t essential but after following Ruby’s journey it was great to meet her in real life!
We'll be developing another #UofGJourney story starting at the end of August so keep your eyes peeled on our UofGlasgow Snapchat account.
